City Symposium offers insights on future of workplaces and facilities using smart technologies

Today, 20 March 2025, the City’s Facilities Management Department hosted the Smart and Future Facilities Management Symposium. The symposium brought together industry leaders and experts to discuss innovative developments; share insights; and showcase transformative solutions that will shape how facilities within the private and public sector are managed.
The symposium featured an impressive line-up of keynote speakers, including Andrew Mason, founder of WorkplaceFundi and Augustine Chiew, Chief Technology Officer for Public Services at Huawei. Their expertise provided invaluable perspectives on workplace optimisation and digital transformation in public services.
Industry professionals engaged in dynamic panel discussions and specialised breakaway sessions, which covered topics from smart building technologies to resilient urban infrastructure. The various walking tours at the Civic Centre also showcased innovative facility management practices at this City facility.
‘Our aim with this Smart and Future Facilities Management Symposium was to provide a platform for the City and industry experts to have transformative discussions that will define the next era of facilities management, both in the public and private sector. Today we have heard from various industry leaders on how their innovative practices have successfully been implemented in the built environment to promote the security at facilities for example as well as workplace optimisation.
‘The City is committed to service excellence and innovation in its municipal operations and today’s robust discussions have most definitely provided us with key insights on ways to further promote sustainability and efficiency in public infrastructure. Our role is to now ensure that these insights translate into real-world impact for our communities,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Alderman Theresa Uys.
The discussions at the symposium highlighted the importance of integrating cutting-edge technology and best practices into municipal services.
‘By implementing smarter facilities management solutions, the municipality can actually deliver more cost-effective services. I am sure that some of the insights shared here today will help shape our policies and strategies going forward. We have brought together some of the finest minds in the field to explore solutions that will enhance operational efficiency and the experience employees and visitors have at various facilities,’ said Alderman Uys.
